Morning Commute Alert: Wintry Mix Impacts Roadways

Commuters in Louisville should exercise extreme caution this morning, Monday, March 9, 2026. Regional weather reports indicate a wintry mix following overnight precipitation, leading to potentially slippery conditions on bridges, overpasses, and shaded surface streets. Local authorities are advising drivers to reduce speeds and increase following distances, particularly during the early morning hours as temperatures drop. Maintenance crews from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) are expected to be active, performing routine treatments and pothole repairs necessitated by recent winter weather cycles.

Major Artery and Bridge Construction

Several significant infrastructure projects continue to impact travel times on Louisville’s major arteries today:

  • I-264 & U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road): The $130 million Single-Point Urban Interchange project is in a critical phase. Motorists should expect the U.S. 42 bridge over I-264 to remain restricted to one through-lane in each direction. Additionally, lane shifts are in place on I-264 between Westport Road and I-71.
  • I-65 Maintenance: Crews are continuing bridge maintenance work in the downtown area. While major summer closures are not yet in effect, intermittent lane restrictions may occur near the Jefferson Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard exits as preparatory work for the summer bridge replacement projects continues.
  • Billtown Road (KY 1819): Reconstruction work between Colonnades Place and Easum Road is ongoing. Daily lane closures and flagging operations are likely between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Local Road Closures and Detours

Local commuters should plan for the following long-term and temporary closures currently in effect:

  • Mockingbird Valley Road & Edith Road: Both roads remain closed between River Road and Mellwood Avenue for bridge deck reconstruction on the I-71 overpass. This closure is scheduled to last through July.
  • Rudy Lane: A total closure is in effect between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road for a water main relocation project. Drivers are encouraged to use Hubbard Lane as an alternate route.
  • Aiken Road: Intermittent lane closures with flagging are active between 13113 Aiken Road and Avoca Road for drainage improvements.

Public Transport Update

TARC riders are reminded that the new fare schedule, which went into effect on March 2, 2026, is now standard for all routes. While TARC is currently operating on a regular weekday schedule, passengers should anticipate minor delays on routes traversing the I-264/U.S. 42 construction zone. Preparation for the "New TARC Network" launch in August 2026 continues, but no major route changes are implemented today.
