Weekend Lane Shifts at Watterson and Brownsboro Road as Interchange Project Advances

Significant Construction at I-264 and U.S. 42
Louisville commuters should prepare for significant lane shifts and localized delays this weekend, particularly in the East End. The $130 million I-264 and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) improvement project is currently at a critical transition point, with Phase 1 work scheduled to conclude this month. Today, Saturday, February 28, 2026, marks the final push for this initial stage of construction.
At the intersection of U.S. 42 and Rudy Lane, motorists will find eastbound U.S. 42 reduced to a single lane. Crews are continuing the removal of the median on the U.S. 42 bridge over the Watterson Expressway. Additionally, southbound Rudy Lane has been reconfigured into a two-lane left turn configuration to facilitate better movement through the intersection. These changes are part of the multi-year effort to reconstruct the interchange into a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), aimed at reducing long-term congestion. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time when navigating this area today, as periodic nightly lane closures on I-264 may occur for ongoing bridge demolition and shift work.
TARC Fare Increases and Service Updates
Public transit users need to prepare for a major change coming this Monday, March 2. Following the TARC Board of Directors' approval earlier this week, a new fare schedule will take effect. Adult riders will see an increase of 50 cents per ride, while senior and student fares will rise by 20 cents. TARC officials have stated these adjustments are essential to stabilize the agency's finances ahead of the "New TARC Network" launch scheduled for August 2026. Commuters using MyTARC cards should verify their balances today to avoid delays during the Monday morning rush. Note that the 10-trip pass is being phased out, though existing passes will be honored until they are redeemed.
Smooth Commute on Recently Completed Corridors
While construction persists in the East End, those traveling through downtown and the NuLu area will find improved conditions. Earlier this week, city officials announced the completion of the East Market Streetscape Project and the River Road Multi-Modal Project. The transformation of East Market Street between Brook Street and Baxter Avenue now provides a dedicated separated bike lane and enhanced crosswalks, making it a reliable alternative for those avoiding the interstates. Similarly, the River Road improvements between 3rd and 7th Streets have established a park-like connection to Waterfront Park, with most major roadway restrictions now lifted.
Ongoing Highway Monitoring
Work on the I-65 Central Corridor bridge replacement project remains active near downtown. For now, construction is largely concentrated beneath the interstate with minimal impact on travel lanes. However, commuters should remain aware that a full closure of I-65 between Jefferson Street and the Watterson Expressway is planned for this summer. For cross-river travel today, the Sherman Minton Bridge is fully operational following its successful 2024 rehabilitation, providing the most direct route for those heading to Southern Indiana.
