TARC Fare Increases Begin Today as Wintry Mix Impacts Morning Commute

New TARC Fare Rates Effective Today

As of today, Monday, March 2, 2026, commuters using the Transit Authority of River City (TARC) will see the first major fare adjustment in over a decade. This update is part of the agency’s preparation for a broader network redesign launching later this year. Commuters should ensure their MyTARC cards are loaded with the correct amounts, as the following rates are now in effect:

  • Adult Single Ride: Increased to $2.25.
  • Senior and Student Fares: Increased to $1.00.
  • 24-Hour Pass: Now $5.00.
  • 7-Day and 30-Day Passes: Adjusted to $25.00 and $75.00, respectively.
  • TARC3 Paratransit: Increased to $4.50 per ride.

While the 10-trip pass has been discontinued for purchase today, TARC will continue to honor previously purchased passes until all trips are used. TARC3 riders have a 60-day grace period to use old tickets or exchange them at Union Station.

Major Construction on I-264 and U.S. 42

The multi-year I-264 and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) improvement project is in a high-activity phase this morning. Drivers using the Watterson Expressway should expect significant traffic shifts between Westport Road and the I-71 interchange, where the interstate is being widened to three lanes in each direction. The U.S. 42 bridge over I-264 remains reduced to one thru-lane in each direction to facilitate reconstruction into a single-point urban interchange (SPUI). Commuters are advised to expect delays during peak hours and watch for nightly lane closures that may extend into the early morning hours.

Key Local Road Closures and Detours

Several significant surface street closures are active today across the metro area:

  • Mockingbird Valley and Edith Roads: Both corridors remain closed to thru-traffic between River Road and Mellwood Avenue for bridge deck reconstruction. This closure is scheduled to remain in place through July.
  • Rudy Lane: Motorists should avoid the stretch between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road, which is closed for a water main relocation project through mid-April.
  • Aiken Road: Expect intermittent lane closures and flagging operations between 13113 Aiken Road and Avoca Road for drainage improvements.
  • Bells Mill Road: The bridge over Floyds Fork remains closed for superstructure replacement.

Weather Advisory: Slick Conditions and Road Maintenance

A morning wintry mix is transitioning into rain today, creating potentially slick conditions on overpasses and bridges. KYTC District 5 crews are monitoring major arteries for pothole formation following recent winter weather. Motorists should stay alert for slow-moving maintenance vehicles and rolling lane closures as crews address roadway wear. Safety officials recommend allowing extra travel time and increasing following distances on wet pavement.
