Old Louisville homicide case: suspect moved from hospital to jail after court appearance and charges filed

Suspect booked into corrections after hospitalization

A Louisville man charged in the death of another man and a dog in Old Louisville was transferred from a hospital to the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections and made an initial court appearance on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf in court.

The case stems from a police response on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026, to the 500 block of West Ormsby Avenue. Officers were dispatched at about 3:30 p.m. during what authorities described as an active investigation. Police reported finding a man inside a residence who was “obviously deceased.”

What investigators say they found at the apartment

Authorities identified the defendant as 55-year-old Charles Gerlach Jr. Investigators said he was located after jumping from a fourth-floor apartment window in what police described as an apparent suicide attempt. Officers then entered the apartment he allegedly jumped from and reported finding a dead Chihuahua in a sink. Police said they later located the man’s body stuffed behind a mattress in a closet.

Investigators say Gerlach admitted stabbing the man and moving the body. Police also reported that he admitted stabbing and drowning the dog.

Charges and bond conditions

Gerlach has been charged with murder, torture of a dog or cat, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence. In court Wednesday, a judge set bond at $1 million full cash. A request in court to reduce the bond was denied.

The judge also set conditions that would apply if bond is posted, including home incarceration and no contact with the victim’s family. The court further ordered that Gerlach have no contact with animals if released pretrial.

  • Custody status: Held at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections following hospital release
  • Bond: $1 million full cash
  • Pretrial conditions if released: Home incarceration; no contact with victim’s family; no contact with animals

Employment details and community impact

Jefferson County Public Schools said Gerlach has worked for the district since 1999 and most recently served as an in-school security monitor at Phoenix School of Discovery. The school communicated to families that the allegations are not connected to the school.

Residents in the area described a significant police presence at the apartment building on West Ormsby Avenue as investigators worked the scene.

What comes next

The case will proceed through Jefferson County’s court process. The charges are allegations, and Gerlach is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
