Public Health Advisory: Respiratory Virus and Varicella Alert

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has issued a high-priority health advisory for Saturday, February 28, 2026, following a sustained surge in seasonal illnesses. Surveillance data for the current season indicates that confirmed influenza cases have surpassed 1,300 across Jefferson County. Additionally, health officials report elevated activity levels for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Residents are urged to ensure all vaccinations are up to date and to isolate immediately if they exhibit symptoms of respiratory distress or fever.

Furthermore, the department is monitoring a localized outbreak of varicella (chickenpox). More than 30 cases have been confirmed, primarily among unvaccinated individuals. Public health officials remind the community that varicella is highly contagious. Infected individuals must remain in isolation until all blisters have fully scabbed over to prevent further community spread.

Infrastructure and Traffic Advisories

Louisville Metro Public Works and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet have several active projects impacting local travel on Saturday:

  • Rudy Lane: This corridor remains closed to through-traffic between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road. The closure is necessary for a critical Louisville Water Company water main relocation. Detour signs are in place, and the project is expected to continue through April 11, 2026.
  • Mockingbird Valley Road and Edith Road: Both roads are closed between River Road and Mellwood Avenue for bridge deck reconstruction on the I-71 overpass. This closure is scheduled to remain in effect through July 2026.
  • Chenoweth Lane (KY 1932): Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures and delays between Shelbyville Road and Brownsboro Road. Crews are performing roadway modifications, sidewalk improvements, and drainage enhancements.
  • Aiken Road: Flaggers may be present between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a drainage project located between Avoca Road and 13113 Aiken Road.
