Public Health Advisory: Respiratory Illness and Chickenpox Surge

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has issued a high-priority advisory effective Friday, February 27, 2026, regarding a significant increase in seasonal respiratory viruses. Surveillance data confirms that influenza cases have surpassed 1,300 for the current season, alongside elevated levels of RSV and pertussis (whooping cough). Health officials strongly recommend that residents remain current on all vaccinations and practice diligent hand hygiene.

Additionally, the department is monitoring a cluster of more than 30 varicella (chickenpox) cases, primarily among unvaccinated individuals. Residents are reminded that chickenpox is highly contagious. Individuals who develop symptoms must isolate until all blisters have fully scabbed over to prevent further community transmission. Masking is encouraged in high-traffic congregate settings, such as schools and senior care facilities, to mitigate the spread of these illnesses.

Metro Council Legislative Update: Benefits and Zoning

Following the regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday evening, February 26, the Louisville Metro Council has advanced several key measures. A significant ordinance aimed at improving municipal recruitment is currently under review by the Labor and Economic Development Committee. The proposal seeks to eliminate the mandatory waiting period for health insurance coverage for new city workers, allowing benefits to begin on the first day of employment for emergency responders and public works crews.

The Council also approved several zoning changes to facilitate neighborhood growth, including developments at 4700 Westport Road, 7402 Beulah Church Road, and several properties on East Oak Street. Furthermore, a $503,738 grant was accepted for the Harrods Creek slope stabilization project, which will address critical drainage and erosion issues in the area.
