Louisville Metro Council Democratic Caucus outlines traffic planning ahead of summer 2026 I-65 shutdown

Two-month closure set for June and July as bridge replacement work accelerates
Louisville Metro Council’s Democratic Caucus is urging residents and businesses to prepare for a planned summer 2026 shutdown of Interstate 65 through central Louisville, a major construction milestone tied to the state’s multi-year I-65 Central Corridor Project.
The closure is scheduled for June and July 2026 and will affect the stretch of I-65 between Jefferson Street and Interstate 264 (the Watterson Expressway). The work is designed to speed replacement of aging bridge structures and reduce the risk of unplanned emergency closures along one of the region’s busiest commuter and freight routes.
What will close, and how traffic will be routed
During the planned shutdown, through-traffic on I-65 will be detoured primarily using I-264 and I-64. While the mainline interstate will be closed in the project limits, several downtown access points are expected to remain available. The on-ramps at Jefferson Street and Liberty Street, along with the Muhammad Ali Boulevard ramp, are slated to remain open during the closure period, even as the detour plan redirects most interstate movements away from the construction zone.
Metro Councilmember JP Lyninger, a member of the Democratic Caucus, emphasized the importance of residents enrolling in official project updates distributed by text and email, with the goal of reducing confusion as schedules and traffic impacts change.
Bridge replacements and the broader construction timeline
The summer shutdown is tied to the first phase of the I-65 Central Corridor Project, a $150 million effort that includes full replacement of three bridges: the structures over Kentucky and Brook streets; Hill Street, a CSX rail line and Burnett Avenue; and Bradley Avenue. State transportation officials have described these bridges as more than 60 years old and rated in poor condition, requiring more frequent inspections prior to replacement. The first-phase bridge work is targeted for completion by mid-2027.
Project planning documents and public briefings have also outlined that the corridor work extends beyond the two-month closure window. Following the summer reopening, drivers should expect ongoing reduced-capacity conditions and continuing construction activity as additional bridge work advances across the corridor.
What residents can do now
- Review detour options in advance of June 2026, particularly for commutes between downtown and the airport, the Kentucky Exposition Center area, and southern Jefferson County.
- Plan for longer travel times during June and July 2026, especially during peak commuter hours.
- Sign up for project alerts to track lane restrictions, ramp status changes, and revised work schedules as construction approaches.
The Democratic Caucus framed the shutdown as a citywide mobility issue that will affect daily travel patterns, access to jobs and services, and freight movement through Louisville’s urban core.
Additional traffic advisories and construction sequencing details are expected to be released as the project approaches the June 2026 closure date.
