Metro Council Committees Meet to Advance 2026 Legislative Priorities

Today, Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the Louisville Metro Council begins a critical series of committee meetings at City Hall to address the city’s growing infrastructure needs, economic development strategies, and government oversight. As the first full committee cycle of February, today’s sessions are expected to focus on the implementation of Mayor Craig Greenberg’s 2026 agenda, which emphasizes public safety and downtown revitalization.

Focus on Infrastructure and Public Works

At 4:00 PM, the Public Works Committee, chaired by Councilman Jeff Hudson, is scheduled to meet. A major item on the horizon for this committee is the advancement of the city’s infrastructure plan, which includes a requested $30 million for street paving and significant allocations for sidewalk repairs. Discussions are also expected to touch upon the proposed first responder training facility. Mayor Greenberg has prioritized this facility to serve Jefferson County and surrounding areas, providing comprehensive training from emergency response to specialized driving skills.

Economic Development and Downtown Revitalization

The Labor and Economic Development Committee meets today at 3:00 PM. Under the leadership of Chair Ben Reno-Weber, the committee is reviewing incentives aimed at revitalizing the downtown corridor. Key projects on the mayor’s 2026 legislative request list include:

  • The Community Care Campus project to provide shelter and services.
  • Ongoing renovations to the Belvedere and Waterfront Amphitheater.
  • Development within the LOUMED district and the Convention Center Corridor.
  • Strategic planning for the future use of the Humana building.

These initiatives are part of a broader push to leverage state and local funding to create jobs and enhance the city’s tourism appeal, particularly as Louisville prepares to host the Louisville Kings in the United Football League.

Planning, Zoning, and Oversight

The day’s legislative activities began at 1:00 PM with the Planning and Zoning Committee. Chaired by Andrew Owen, the committee is tasked with reviewing amendments to the Land Development Code and various zoning proposals intended to address the city's housing shortage. Following the late afternoon sessions, the Government Oversight, Audit, and Appointments Committee will convene at 5:00 PM to review mayoral appointments to various boards and commissions.

Public Comment Opportunities

Residents are also reminded that a 30-day public comment period opened yesterday, February 2, through the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District regarding a proposed agreed board order with Lanning Chemical Company. While the official hearing for this matter is not until March, the District is currently accepting written testimony from the public. All Metro Council committee meetings held today in the Metro Council Chambers are open to the public and available for live streaming via the city’s official portal.
