Caravan Comedy Club will leave Mid City Mall in March as Highlands redevelopment plans advance
A long-running venue reaches its final dates at 1250 Bardstown Road
Caravan Comedy Club, one of Louisville’s longest-operating stand-up rooms, is scheduled to end its run at Mid City Mall next month. The club’s final performances at the Bardstown Road location are set for Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21, with Louisville comedian Rich Ragains billed as the headliner for the closing weekend.
The club’s departure is tied to plans to demolish the Mid City Mall structure as part of a broader redevelopment of the site in the Highlands. Project materials and public presentations in recent weeks describe a shift from the enclosed mall format to a new open-air concept branded as “Mid City Market,” with demolition targeted by the end of 2026 and a projected opening for the new development in early 2028.
Redevelopment details: demolition timeline and proposed uses
The redevelopment concept presented to neighborhood groups includes a grocery component, multiple retail buildings and redesigned pedestrian circulation. Plans discussed publicly also include an emphasis on walkability, more greenspace, and a reduction in on-site parking by roughly one-quarter, removing more than 100 spaces. The Louisville Free Public Library branch currently at Mid City Mall is expected to remain on the site, with a move to a new building planned along the Beechwood Avenue side of the project area.
The existing Mid City Mall property has been marketed for sale since November 2024 and is assessed at $11.4 million for tax purposes. The redevelopment planning has coincided with a wave of departures by longtime tenants and nearby nightlife anchors in and around the mall complex.
From Funny Farm to Caravan: nearly four decades of comedy in one room
The comedy space at Mid City Mall dates back to 1987, when the venue opened as the Funny Farm. Over the years it continued operating through name and management changes, including later branding as Comedy Caravan and other iterations, while remaining in the same mall footprint.
The room has hosted touring and local performers across generations. Publicly documented performer lists associated with the venue include Steve Harvey, Howie Mandel, Sinbad, Mitch Hedberg and Pauly Shore, among others.
Owners say they are searching for a new location
Current owners Diannea and Kerry Comstock, who have operated the club for several years, have said they are looking for a new home as redevelopment advances. They have indicated a preference to remain in the Highlands, while acknowledging the practical challenge of finding a suitable venue that can accommodate club operations and scheduling.
- Final scheduled shows at the current location: March 20–21
- Redevelopment plan: demolition by the end of 2026; target opening in early 2028
- Key site features discussed publicly: grocery component, retail buildings, greenspace, library relocation on-site, and reduced parking
For many performers, the closing represents the end of a specific stage and room—one that helped shape local comedy careers while also bringing national tours into a neighborhood setting.
What comes next for the club will depend on whether a new location is secured in time to preserve continuity for bookings, staff and audiences that have treated Mid City Mall as a regular stop for live stand-up.
