Morning Commute Overview

For those hitting the roads early this Saturday, February 14, 2026, traffic across the Louisville metro area is moving at normal weekend speeds. However, commuters should be mindful of several long-term construction projects and specific local closures that may affect plans for Valentine’s Day celebrations and essential travel. While major arteries like the Watterson Expressway and Gene Snyder Freeway remain largely clear this morning, localized bottlenecks are expected to develop as we head into the evening hours due to holiday dining and special events.

Major Arteries and Interstate Roadworks

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) continues preliminary work for the massive I-65 Central Corridor project. Drivers should stay alert for recent changes on the I-65 and I-264 (Watterson Expressway) interchanges. Crews have been active this week widening and restriping ramps to prepare for future summer detours. While most of this work occurs overnight, motorists may notice narrower lanes and new traffic patterns on several exit ramps throughout the weekend.

  • U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road): Traffic remains restricted near the I-264 bridge. Eastbound U.S. 42 is reduced to one through lane west of Rudy Lane, while westbound traffic is limited to a single lane at Northfield Drive. These measures are necessary for the ongoing bridge reconstruction project.
  • Interstate 71: Widening work continues between downtown and the Gene Snyder Freeway. Traffic is currently shifted to the outside shoulders to maintain two travel lanes, but intermittent daytime lane closures may occur if crews require additional space for equipment.

Local Road Closures and Detours

Several significant local road closures are active today that will require detours for residential and commercial traffic:

  • Rudy Lane: This thoroughfare is currently closed between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road for a water main relocation project. The closure is expected to last through mid-April, and through-traffic should use alternative routes.
  • Blevins Gap Road: A portion of the road near Saw Mill Road remains closed for a culvert replacement. This project, which began in late January, has approximately six weeks of work remaining.
  • Mitchell Hill Road: Portions of this roadway remain under repair with limited access for local residents only.

Public Transport and Special Events

The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) reports that all bus services are currently operating on regular Saturday schedules. There are no active winter weather detours as of this morning. Passengers should note that TARC is observing its annual Black History Month tribute this week; a seat will be reserved on every bus in honor of Rosa Parks. For those heading to the Valentine’s Day Bourbon Trolley tour or the candlelit hikes at Jefferson Memorial Forest, expect increased pedestrian activity and minor congestion near downtown, Nulu, and the Fairdale area.
