Public Health and Weather: Extreme Cold and Respiratory Alert

Louisville Metro officials have issued a high-priority advisory regarding dangerously low temperatures and subzero wind chills currently affecting the region. The National Weather Service and the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness urge all residents to limit time outdoors and ensure pets are brought inside. Health officials recommend dressing in multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing and covering all exposed skin to prevent frostbite.

Additionally, the latest Director’s Report from the Health Department highlights a significant rise in Pertussis (whooping cough) and Influenza cases across Jefferson County. With over 1,364 confirmed flu cases reported this season, residents are strongly encouraged to stay up to date on vaccinations, including the Tdap booster and the annual flu shot. If you are experiencing respiratory symptoms, health leaders advise staying home to prevent further community spread in congregate settings like schools and workplaces.

Public Meetings: TARC Accessible Transit Hearing

The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) will host an accessible public meeting today, Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. The meeting is being held at the McDowell Center, located at 8412 Westport Road in District 7. This session is part of a series of public engagements regarding proposed fare changes and the 2026 Title VI Plan. Residents requiring specific disability assistance or translation services for future sessions are reminded to contact the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) directly to ensure accommodations are finalized.

Road and Infrastructure: Significant Closures and Detours

Motorists should be aware of several major traffic disruptions active today. Blevins Gap Road remains closed near Saw Mill Road for a critical culvert replacement project aimed at improving drainage and preventing local flooding. This closure is expected to last through March, with a signed detour utilizing the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265). Additionally, the I-65 South to I-64 West ramp remains closed through the end of January to support ongoing bridge expansion joint repairs.

Emergency crews have also reported a water main rupture in the 1300 block of Lexington Road between Axis and Payne Street, leading to slick conditions and an immediate road closure. In the downtown area, the NuLu bike lane from East Market to Baxter Avenue remains closed until further notice due to accumulated snow and ice. Public Works crews are prioritizing primary snow routes; however, many neighborhood roads may remain untreated during the current freeze.

Community Resources: Heating Assistance and Grants

The Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services continues to accept applications for the LIHEAP Winter Crisis component. This program provides emergency financial aid to households at risk of utility disconnection and will remain open through March 27, 2026, or until funds are exhausted. Furthermore, non-profit organizations are reminded that applications for the Fiscal Year 2027 External Agency Fund (EAF) grants are currently open. These grants support local programs focused on social services and the arts that align with the city's strategic goals for healthy and safe neighborhoods.
