Public Notice: Respiratory Health Advisory and Metro Infrastructure Updates
Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Respiratory Virus Surge
The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has issued a formal advisory following a significant increase in respiratory illnesses across Jefferson County. Surveillance data indicates that confirmed influenza cases have surpassed 1,300 for the current season, alongside elevated levels of RSV and pertussis (whooping cough). Health officials strongly urge residents to ensure they are up to date on vaccinations and to stay home if they exhibit any symptoms of illness. Masking is recommended in high-traffic congregate settings to help mitigate the current surge and protect vulnerable populations.
Infrastructure and Traffic Alerts
Several major roadway projects are currently impacting traffic flow within the Metro area. Residents should plan for the following disruptions:
- Rudy Lane Closure: A temporary closure remains in effect on Rudy Lane between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road. This closure is necessary for a Louisville Water Company water main relocation project and is expected to continue through April 11, 2026. Local detours are posted.
- I-65 Central Corridor: Ongoing overnight ramp and lane closures continue on Interstate 65 and Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway). These closures are part of the multi-phase I-65 Central Corridor Project aimed at bridge safety and mobility improvements.
- I-64 Lane Restrictions: Motorists are advised of upcoming overnight lane closures on I-64 beginning Sunday, February 22. While the work begins shortly, crews are currently preparing work zones for storm drain cleaning between mile markers 53 and 58.
Metro Council Legislative Update
Following the most recent legislative session, the Louisville Metro Council has approved a $5.5 million contract with Seven Counties Services. This agreement is designed to expand deflection services, providing specialized response teams for behavioral health crises. Additionally, the Council recently amended local ordinances to allow Louisville Parks Police to qualify for funding under the Kentucky Law Enforcement Foundation Program Fund, a move intended to bolster safety and staffing within city parks.
Community Grant Opportunities
Louisville Metro Government is currently accepting applications for the Fiscal Year 2027 External Agency Fund (EAF). Non-profit organizations focused on social services, arts, and culture are eligible to apply for grants ranging from $25,000 to $50,000. These funds are intended to support projects that align with the city’s goals for community safety and neighborhood revitalization. The final deadline for submission via the Metro grant portal is Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
