Public Notice: Louisville Metro Health Advisories and Infrastructure Updates

Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Respiratory Illness and Chickenpox Alert
The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has issued a priority advisory regarding a significant surge in respiratory illnesses throughout Jefferson County. Confirmed influenza cases have exceeded 1,300 for the current season, alongside rising instances of RSV and pertussis (whooping cough). Health officials strongly urge residents to remain up to date on vaccinations and to stay home if they exhibit symptoms of illness.
Additionally, the department is monitoring an uptick in varicella (chickenpox) cases. More than 30 cases have been reported recently, primarily among unvaccinated individuals. Residents are reminded that chickenpox remains highly contagious; those diagnosed must isolate until all blisters have fully scabbed over to prevent community spread.
Infrastructure and Road Closure Notices
Major infrastructure projects are currently impacting traffic flow in several key corridors. Residents should plan for the following active closures and modifications:
- Rudy Lane: A total closure remains in effect between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road for a water main relocation project. This closure is scheduled to continue through April 11, 2026.
- KY 1932 (Chenoweth Lane): Lane closures and intermittent delays are expected between Shelbyville Road and Brownsboro Road. This $5.6 million safety and drainage improvement project is slated for completion in late 2026.
- Pothole Maintenance: Following recent winter weather, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are conducting emergency pothole repairs on major interstates. Motorists are advised to watch for rolling lane closures and moving work zones.
Holiday Waste Collection Schedule
In observance of Presidents Day on Monday, February 16, Louisville Metro Government reminds residents that garbage and recycling collection will proceed as regularly scheduled for those within the Urban Services District. There will be no holiday delay for this Monday’s routes. Residents should ensure all bins are set at the curb by 6:00 a.m. to guarantee service.
Community Grant Opportunities
The application window for the Fiscal Year 2027 External Agency Fund (EAF) is currently open. Local non-profit organizations specializing in social services, arts, and culture are eligible to apply for grants typically ranging from $25,000 to $50,000. These funds support projects aligned with the city's strategic goals for community safety and neighborhood revitalization. The final deadline for submission through the Metro grant portal is Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
Legislative Update: Recovery Residence Licensing
Metro Council has officially approved Ordinance O-001-26, which establishes new licensing requirements for recovery residences within the city. The measure requires these facilities to provide proof of state certification to obtain or renew local business licenses, ensuring greater oversight and protection for vulnerable residents.
