Multiple Fire Departments Respond to East Louisville Apartment Fire, Leaving More Than 20 Residents Displaced

Overnight blaze damaged multiple units near Highway 22
Multiple fire departments responded to an overnight fire at an east Louisville apartment building on Summit Park Place, near Highway 22 and Chamberlain Lane. The fire began shortly before 12:30 a.m. on January 12, 2026, and drew a large multi-agency response as crews worked to contain flames and heavy smoke that extended beyond a single unit.
On arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions affecting the second and third floors, as well as the attic space—an area that can allow flames to travel quickly above occupied apartments. Firefighters from Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS, St. Matthews Fire Department and Pewee Valley Fire Protection District participated in the response.
Injuries and extent of displacement
Eight people were treated for minor smoke inhalation. Officials reported three units sustained direct damage, while a total of 10 units were affected overall. More than 20 residents were displaced.
Displaced residents were expected to receive assistance with temporary lodging through apartment management and the American Red Cross.
Cause tied to balcony disposal; investigation outcomes reported
Investigators determined the fire started when cigarette butts were discarded into a flower pot on a balcony. Fires originating on balconies can spread into building cavities and attic spaces, particularly when combustible materials are present and wind conditions help carry heat and embers toward openings.
Why multi-agency responses are common in the East End
East Louisville includes areas served by multiple fire protection districts, and structure fires—especially those involving multi-family buildings—often trigger automatic mutual-aid responses. Such incidents typically require additional engines, ladder companies, and personnel to conduct simultaneous tasks, including evacuation support, fire attack, ventilation, search operations, and exposure protection for adjacent units.
