Major Delays on I-65 and Watterson Following Morning Crashes

Morning Commute Overview for Wednesday, January 21, 2026
Commuters in the Louisville metro area are facing a challenging morning due to multiple traffic incidents on major arteries and several active construction zones. Winter weather from earlier in the week continues to impact secondary road conditions, though the primary delays this morning stem from significant accidents on Interstate 65 and the Watterson Expressway.
Morning Traffic Incidents
Drivers should expect heavy congestion and should consider alternative routes following two major collisions reported early this morning:
- I-65 South (Hardin County): All southbound lanes are currently blocked at mile marker 102, near the Joe Prather Highway interchange. A multi-vehicle accident involving a jack-knifed semi-truck was reported shortly after 7:10 a.m. Emergency crews are on the scene, but traffic is backed up for several miles.
- I-264 West (Watterson Expressway): A crash involving a Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) bus and another passenger vehicle occurred before 6:45 a.m. This incident has blocked the two left westbound lanes. While no injuries have been reported, the lane closures are causing significant rubbernecking and delays for those heading toward the airport and Dixie Highway.
Active Roadworks and Construction Alerts
Beyond this morning's accidents, several long-term infrastructure projects continue to restrict traffic flow across the city:
- I-65 Downtown Corridor: Bridge maintenance work remains active. The I-65 South bridge at Exit 136C leading to Jefferson Street is reduced to a single 10-foot lane. Additionally, South Floyd Street is closed between East Jefferson and East Liberty Streets for ongoing overpass repairs.
- I-264 and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road): Phase 1 of the $130 million interchange improvement project is in full swing. Motorists will encounter median removal work on the U.S. 42 bridge and lane shifts. Eastbound U.S. 42 is currently reduced to one lane through the Rudy Lane intersection.
- I-71 Widening: Construction continues between the I-65 interchange and Zorn Avenue. While major work typically occurs overnight, lane shifts and narrowed shoulders are in place during daytime hours, slowing the merge from the downtown spaghetti junction.
Public Transit and TARC Updates
Transit Authority of River City (TARC) riders should note that all winter weather detours from the previous weekend have been lifted, and buses are running on regular schedules. However, TARC is hosting a public open house today, January 21, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at United Crescent Hill Ministries. This meeting will discuss the proposed Title VI Plan and upcoming fare changes associated with the system-wide network redesign scheduled for later this year.
