Morning Commute Overview for January 22, 2026

Good morning, Louisville. Commuters heading into the city today, Thursday, January 22, should prepare for significant bottlenecks on major arteries. While the current weather remains clear with above-freezing temperatures and occasional sun, several long-term construction projects have reached critical phases this week. Drivers are encouraged to allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes for travel, particularly when approaching the downtown core and the St. Matthews area.

Critical Interstate Impacts: I-65 and I-64

The most significant delay for morning travelers is the ongoing bridge maintenance on I-65 South. The bridge at Exit 136C, which serves as a primary route to Jefferson Street in downtown Louisville, has been reduced to a single 10-foot lane. Wide loads are strictly prohibited, and heavy congestion is building as traffic merges into the restricted lane. Additionally, South Floyd Street is completely closed between East Jefferson and East Liberty Streets. Detours are in place using South Jackson Street, but traffic is slow-moving throughout the area.

On I-64 East and West, work continues near the mile point 11.799 marker. This bridge replacement project near Exit 10 (Cannons Lane) and the I-264 Watterson Expressway interchange may cause intermittent lane closures. While traffic is currently in its final configuration, motorists should remain alert for crews working on the shoulders and final bridge elements.

Gene Snyder Freeway Maintenance

Maintenance crews are active on KY 841 (Gene Snyder Freeway) between mile points 35.0 and 37.7. This work, centered near the East End Tunnel, involves routine roadway inspections and cleaning. Expect single-lane closures throughout the day between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to avoid peak rush hour, though lingering delays may impact those traveling just before or after these windows.

Surface Street Alerts: Chenoweth Lane and Blevins Gap

  • KY 1932 (Chenoweth Lane): The major reconstruction project between U.S. 60 (Shelbyville Road) and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) is now in full swing after starting earlier this week. Expect lane closures and significant delays as crews work on roadway modifications and drainage enhancements.
  • Blevins Gap Road: A portion of Blevins Gap Road near Saw Mill Road remains closed for a 10-week culvert replacement project. A signed detour is active, directing traffic to the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265).
  • Garland Avenue: The intersection of Garland and Loretto Avenues is closed for a Louisville Water Company main project.

TARC and Weather Outlook

TARC services are currently running on regular schedules, though the transit authority is reminding riders of upcoming public meetings regarding the 2026 network redesign. Looking ahead, local meteorologists are tracking a major winter storm set to arrive Friday night. Commuters should take advantage of today’s relatively calm conditions to prepare for hazardous travel over the coming weekend.
