Louisville’s bench lifts Cardinals past SMU 88-74 after second-half clampdown at KFC Yum! Center

Bench production and second-half defense turn the game
LOUISVILLE — Louisville used a pair of key reserve performances and a sharp defensive shift after halftime to beat SMU 88-74 on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the KFC Yum! Center.
Louisville trailed 47-44 at the break before holding SMU to 27 points in the second half. SMU shot 11-of-30 after intermission, a stark contrast to its first-half efficiency, as Louisville tightened ball pressure and limited second-chance opportunities during decisive stretches.
Brown and Rooths change the rotation picture
Mikel Brown Jr., returning after an illness and coming off the bench, led Louisville with 20 points and four assists. His scoring steadied the Cardinals during a game that swung on short bursts: Louisville’s ability to string together stops in the second half created transition chances and cleaner half-court looks.
Forward Khani Rooths, also used as a reserve after missing roughly two weeks, delivered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. His rebounding helped Louisville control possessions at key moments, particularly as SMU pushed to keep the game within reach.
Louisville also had balanced scoring behind Brown. Isaac McKneely scored 14 points, Ryan Conwell added 12, and J’Vonne Hadley finished with 10, giving the Cardinals five players in double figures.
SMU’s first-half edge fades as turnovers and fouls mount
SMU entered the afternoon with one of the nation’s most productive offenses and built a three-point halftime lead behind steady perimeter creation and efficient finishing around the rim. In the second half, however, the Mustangs struggled to maintain their pace as Louisville’s defense forced tougher shots and more contested possessions.
Box-score totals reflected the shift in control: SMU finished with 16 turnovers and 20 team fouls. Louisville’s ability to convert the Mustangs’ mistakes into points, while staying composed against SMU’s pressure, proved central to the final margin.
- Halftime: SMU 47, Louisville 44
- Second half: Louisville 44, SMU 27
- Final: Louisville 88, SMU 74
Context: a response after Duke loss and a January finish at home
The win came four days after Louisville’s 83-52 loss at Duke and allowed the Cardinals to close January with a home victory. Louisville had also beaten SMU in the teams’ most recent prior meeting, a 98-73 road win on Jan. 21, 2025.
Louisville’s second-half defensive hold — 27 points allowed — was the defining statistic in a game decided by adjustments and bench impact.
Louisville will carry the result into February with a renewed emphasis on consistency: Saturday’s performance showed how quickly the Cardinals can change a game when their defense sets the tone and their rotation provides production beyond the opening group.
