Official City Notice: Emergency Winter Weather Alert

The Louisville Metro Government and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) have issued a severe weather advisory effective Friday, January 23, 2026. A major winter storm is expected to impact the region through Monday morning, with forecasts predicting up to 15 inches of snow and significant ice accumulation. Governor Andy Beshear and local emergency management officials are urging residents to avoid all non-essential travel to allow road crews to clear primary routes. Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills are expected to persist through midweek. Residents should ensure emergency kits are stocked and weather alerts are enabled on mobile devices.

Public Health Advisory: Measles and Respiratory Illness Update

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) is monitoring a confirmed case of measles within the state, following an exposure incident earlier this month. Health officials are investigating potential community exposures and strongly recommend that residents verify their immunization status. Additionally, the latest respiratory virus dashboard indicates high levels of influenza, COVID-19, and RSV activity across Jefferson County. Free combination at-home test kits remain available at select community centers to help mitigate the spread of seasonal illnesses.

Infrastructure and Road Maintenance Updates

  • I-65 South Bridge Maintenance: Through February 2026, the I-65 South bridge from Exit 136C to Jefferson Street is reduced to a single 10-foot lane for essential preservation work. Wide loads are prohibited, and South Floyd Street remains closed between East Jefferson and East Liberty Streets.
  • I-71 Widening Project: Motorists should expect temporary daytime lane closures on I-71 North and South as part of the ongoing $50 million improvement project. Traffic shifts to the outside shoulders are in effect to maintain two travel lanes during construction.
  • Utility Repairs: Ongoing utility work on Northbound S. Second Street between W. Broadway and E. Chestnut Street will continue to impact the curb lane and sidewalk through the end of the month.

Administrative and Public Comment Opportunities

Louisville Metro currently has several open periods for public input on city regulations and funding allocations:

  • Air Pollution Control District (APCD): A public comment period is open until February 17, 2026, regarding proposed amendments to Regulation 2.08 (Fees). A public hearing is scheduled for February 18.
  • Housing and Community Development: The public has until January 25, 2026, to comment on the proposed reallocation of $1,500,000 in HOME funds intended to bolster down payment assistance and tenant-based rental programs.
  • Metro Council: Following the reorganization of the 2026 Metro Council under President Brent Ackerson, the next full legislative meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 29, at 6:00 p.m. in the Metro Council Chambers.
