Louisville avoids opening-weekend sweep by routing Michigan State 9-1 in Sunday series finale

Cardinals salvage finale after dropping first two games at Jim Patterson Stadium
Louisville opened the 2026 season with a split outcome in its first weekend series, closing with a 9-1 victory over Michigan State on Sunday, Feb. 15, at Jim Patterson Stadium. The win prevented a sweep after the Cardinals lost 4-3 on Friday, Feb. 13, and fell 13-4 on Saturday, Feb. 14.
Sunday’s result left Louisville at 1-2 and Michigan State at 2-1 through three games. The Cardinals entered the weekend ranked No. 8, adding early-season stakes to a matchup that served as Michigan State’s first trip to Louisville in decades and the teams’ first multi-game series meeting.
Early offense and a first-time starter set the tone
Louisville paired an early offensive surge with its most effective pitching performance of the weekend. The Cardinals scored three runs in the first inning and added two more in the second to build separation quickly, then extended the margin with runs in the middle and late innings.
On the mound, right-hander Wyatt Danilowicz delivered six innings in his first collegiate start after working primarily as a reliever last season. Danilowicz allowed two hits, struck out nine, and issued one walk, keeping Michigan State off the scoreboard through the bulk of his outing.
Lineup depth shows across 13-hit afternoon
Louisville totaled 13 hits and received production throughout the order. Every starter reached base, six different Cardinals drove in runs, and the club recorded five stolen bases as part of an aggressive approach on the bases.
- Alex Alicea finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and a stolen base.
- Lucas Moore went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a walk.
- Kade Elam added a 2-for-4 day with an RBI and a walk.
Louisville’s scoring included a mix of situational pressure and timely hits. The Cardinals opened the scoring with a run aided by a fielding error, then added RBIs on a single and a fielder’s choice in the first inning. Additional runs followed on a wild pitch and RBI singles as Louisville continued to capitalize on opportunities.
Relief work closes it out, with one run allowed late
After Danilowicz exited, Louisville’s bullpen limited Michigan State to one run, which came in the eighth inning. The Cardinals kept the finale controlled into the final outs, finishing the weekend with a needed corrective performance after allowing 17 runs across the first two games.
Next, Louisville is scheduled to remain at home for a midweek game against Xavier on Tuesday, Feb. 17, with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
The weekend offered Louisville an immediate reminder of the volatility of opening week, while Sunday’s win provided a foundation to stabilize its early-season profile before moving deeper into the nonconference schedule.
