Interstate Updates: I-71 Widening and I-65 Maintenance

Commuters utilizing I-71 this morning should prepare for continued disruptions near the Zorn Avenue interchange. As part of the ongoing $50 million widening project, contract crews are implementing daily alternating single-lane closures on Zorn Avenue to facilitate bridge pier construction. These closures are active today and are expected to persist through mid-April. Additionally, motorists should be aware that Edith Road remains closed between River Road and Mellwood Avenue through Friday, March 6, to accommodate related infrastructure work. While two lanes of traffic in each direction remain open on I-71 during peak travel hours, drivers should remain alert for shifting traffic patterns between the I-65 interchange and Zorn Avenue.

On I-65, the Central Corridor Project continues its preliminary phase. Current work is primarily concentrated beneath the interstate structures, resulting in minimal impact on mainline traffic for today’s commute. However, maintenance crews are active across the district for pothole patching and drain cleaning following recent winter weather. Motorists are advised to watch for rolling lane closures and slow-moving maintenance vehicles throughout the metro area.

Local Roadworks and Widening Projects

A major widening project on U.S. 60 (Shelbyville Road) is now in full swing. Drivers traveling between KY 2861 (Eastwood Cutoff Road) and Rockcrest Way can expect daily alternating lane closures between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This project, which officially ramped up earlier this week, aims to improve capacity but will cause significant mid-day delays for those moving through the Eastwood area.

  • KY 1932 (Chenoweth Lane): Expect intermittent lane closures between U.S. 60 and U.S. 42 today from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for drainage enhancements and roadway modifications.
  • KY 841 (Gene Snyder Freeway): Routine maintenance is scheduled near the East End Tunnel (mile markers 35 to 37). While most work is occurring during off-peak hours, some sidewalk and shoulder closures may be visible.
  • Downtown Conversion: Work continues on the one-way to two-way conversion near Goss Avenue and East Gray Street. Lane shifts are in place as crews work toward a scheduled Spring completion.

TARC Public Transit Alerts

Public transit riders are reminded that the new TARC fare schedule is now officially in effect as of earlier this week. The updated structure includes the elimination of the 10-trip pass and adjusted rates for TARC3 paratransit services. If you are still using old TARC3 tickets, a 60-day grace period is currently active, allowing you to use them or trade them for credit at Union Station through early May.

All TARC fixed-route services are currently operating on regular schedules. Previous winter weather detours have been fully lifted, and no major delays are reported for the morning routes, though buses may experience minor delays in the Zorn Avenue and Shelbyville Road construction zones.
