Kentucky Exposition Center expansion reaches milestone as Phase I advances toward late-2026 completion in Louisville

Project status and what the milestone represents
The Kentucky Exposition Center’s multi-year expansion and renovation has reached a significant construction milestone as Phase I work continues on a new, large-scale multi-purpose facility intended to reshape the venue’s capacity for major events. The broader program is described as a $460-plus million transformation, with Phase I structured as a $180 million building project and Phase II planned as a $213 million redevelopment of existing exhibit areas.
Work tied to Phase I includes demolition that cleared space for the new construction, along with traffic and access upgrades that are already visible to visitors. The campus has also added flexibility for large events through site work on reclaimed property for parking and event activations.
Phase I: new 350,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility
Phase I centers on a 350,000-square-foot multi-purpose building designed for a wide range of uses, including livestock competitions, equine events, sporting tournaments, trade shows and conventions. Project plans describe specialized event-support features such as wash areas and other back-of-house functions geared to agriculture and large-format shows, along with multiple major entrances and additional guest-facing services.
The new structure replaces Newmarket Hall, a longtime part of the campus built in 1968 that previously served as a hub for livestock auctions and related activity during signature events. Demolition began in April 2025, with the project timeline noting completion of that demolition in May 2025. Current planning targets a late-2026 handover for Phase I, with the facility expected to host major events beginning in 2027.
Gate and site upgrades: capacity and circulation improvements
Beyond the new hall, the expansion program includes infrastructure and circulation changes intended to manage heavy event traffic. Gate 4 on Crittenden Drive reopened in May 2025 following a renovation that increased vehicle lanes and added digital wayfinding, with queueing capacity intended to reduce spillback onto surrounding roads. Gate 2 is listed as the final entrance slated for renovation, with work expected to follow a schedule designed to minimize disruption to the event calendar.
Separately, approximately 300,000 square feet of contiguous land at 911 Phillips Lane—previously under lease—was reclaimed in June 2025 for flexible parking and event activations. Plans indicated the space would support large seasonal events hosted on the grounds.
Phase II: redevelopment of West Wing, West Hall and Pavilion
Phase II is planned to redevelop the West Wing, West Hall and Pavilion into a connected multi-purpose wing totaling 249,000 square feet of exhibit space, along with expanded pre-function areas, additional meeting rooms and upgraded food and beverage operations. The construction sequence anticipates Phase II beginning after Phase I is completed, with an estimated build period of roughly 18 to 24 months once underway.
