Morning Overview: Icy Conditions Persist

Louisville commuters should prepare for a slow and cautious drive this Sunday, February 8, 2026. Following the freezing rain that impacted the area late Friday and Saturday, the Louisville Metro Snow Team remains active in treating dedicated snow routes. While primary arteries have been salted, residual ice remains a significant hazard on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and maintain a safe following distance, as temperatures are expected to hover near the freezing mark throughout the morning.

Major Highway and Bridge Alerts

  • I-264 (Watterson Expressway): Significant congestion is expected at the U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) interchange. The U.S. 42 bridge over I-264 is currently reduced to one thru-lane in each direction as part of the ongoing Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) reconstruction. Additionally, expect nightly closures of I-264 for bridge demolition work through the end of the weekend.
  • I-64 East and West: Use caution near mile point 11.79 (Cannons Lane) and the Watterson interchange. Although traffic is in its final configuration, periodic lane closures are still possible as crews finish bridge replacement tasks.
  • Chenoweth Lane (KY 1932): Roadway modifications between Shelbyville Road and Brownsboro Road are ongoing. Expect daily and nightly lane closures as part of a project involving drainage and sidewalk enhancements.

Full Road Closures and Local Detours

Several long-term infrastructure projects have necessitated full road closures that will impact weekend travel:

  • Blevins Gap Road: A total closure is in effect near 4021 Blevins Gap Road for a culvert replacement project. Motorists should use the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265) via the Dixie Highway or Stonestreet Road exits to bypass this section. Local access is maintained but through-traffic is strictly prohibited.
  • Bells Mill Road (KY 1526): The bridge over Floyds Fork remains closed for superstructure replacement. This closure is scheduled to remain in place through May 2026.
  • River Road: Construction by the Louisville Water Company continues between Zorn Avenue and Prospect. Expect delays as crews install new water lines to improve treatment processes.

Public Transit and Downtown Event Traffic

TARC is currently operating on regular Sunday schedules. However, following recent winter weather alerts, riders should anticipate minor delays and are encouraged to use the mobile tracking app for real-time bus locations. Downtown travelers should expect heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic near the Kentucky International Convention Center for the final day of the Oddities & Curiosities Expo. Additionally, Fourth Street Live! is expected to see a surge in visitors this afternoon for the Big Game Bash.
