Morning Overview

Commuters in Louisville are facing a slow start this Wednesday, January 28, 2026. While major interstates have been largely cleared by metro snow teams, many secondary and residential streets remain ice-covered following the recent winter storm that dropped over six inches of snow across the area. Temperatures remain in the mid-teens, leading to significant refreezing and slick spots on overpasses and shaded curves. Authorities urge drivers to use extreme caution, as the extreme cold has made salt treatment less effective on certain surface streets.

Key Road Closures and Work Zones

  • Lexington Road: Currently closed between Axis and Payne Street. Louisville Water crews remain on-site in the 1300 block to repair a ruptured fire hydrant. The break has caused localized flooding and severe icing on the roadway, requiring detours through the afternoon.
  • Blevins Gap Road: A portion of the road near 4021 Blevins Gap Road remains closed for a culvert replacement project. A signed detour is in place directing traffic to the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265). This closure is expected to continue through late March.
  • I-71 Widening Project: Traffic is currently shifted to the outside shoulders between the I-65 interchange and Zorn Avenue. While two lanes remain open in each direction, the lanes are narrow. Avoid this stretch during peak hours if possible to prevent delays caused by the 45 MPH work zone speed limit.
  • I-65 Central Corridor: Preliminary construction work is occurring beneath the interstate near the Muhammad Ali Boulevard interchange. No major lane closures are reported today, but crews are active in the area as they prepare for the full interstate shutdown scheduled for this summer.

Public Transport and TARC Alerts

The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) continues to operate on regular winter weather detours today. While most routes are running, riders should anticipate delays as buses navigate icy side streets. Notable updates include:

  • Route 15 (Market Street): Eastbound buses are currently missing stops between Brownsboro Road at Mt. Holly Avenue and the VA Hospital due to hazardous side street conditions.
  • Major Corridors: Routes 4, 6, 10, 28, 29, 71, and 72 are being prioritized for clearing, but schedule fluctuations are expected throughout the morning.

Commuter Safety Tips

With Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) moving to remote learning through Thursday, morning traffic volume is lighter than a typical Wednesday. However, drivers should still allow for double the normal stopping distance. Ensure your vehicle has an emergency kit and at least a half-tank of gas, as the extreme cold increases the risk of battery failure and mechanical breakdowns during the commute.
