Morning Traffic Overview for Friday, February 13

Good morning, Louisville commuters. As we wrap up the work week this Friday, February 13, 2026, road conditions across the metro area are largely impacted by ongoing multi-million dollar infrastructure improvements. While the morning weather is currently pleasant, regional transport officials are advising motorists to remain vigilant as several major arteries are seeing significant lane shifts and temporary closures. Whether you are heading downtown or traversing the East End, planning for an extra 10 to 15 minutes of travel time is recommended today.

Major Interstate Alerts: I-71 and I-64

The primary focus for commuters this morning remains the $50 million I-71 widening and improvement project. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has confirmed that work is progressing between the I-65/I-71 interchange near Frankfort Avenue and the Zorn Avenue interchange. Motorists should expect the following:

  • I-71 North and South: Temporary daytime lane closures are scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Traffic is currently being shifted to the outside shoulders to maintain two travel lanes, but the narrow lanes and presence of barrier walls are causing rubbernecking delays.
  • I-64 Bridge Replacement: Work continues near Exit 10 (Cannons Lane) and the I-264 Watterson Expressway interchange. While traffic is in its final configuration, intermittent lane closures may occur throughout the day as crews finish punch-list items on the newly replaced structures.
  • I-65 Central Corridor: Preparation has officially begun for the massive summer closure of I-65. While the main closure is not until June, traffic relief efforts and preliminary roadside maintenance are active this week between Jefferson Street and the Watterson Expressway.

Surface Street and Gene Snyder Updates

Beyond the interstates, several key local routes are experiencing disruptions due to bridge and utility work. Commuters in the St. Matthews area should take note of new activity on Chenoweth Lane:

  • KY 1932 (Chenoweth Lane): Construction crews have mobilized this week for roadway modifications and drainage enhancements between Shelbyville Road and Brownsboro Road. Expect intermittent lane closures and flagging operations between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • KY 841 (Gene Snyder Freeway): A left lane closure remains in effect on the northbound side between mile points 35.0 and 37.7. This impacts the approach to the East End Tunnel as technicians replace traffic monitoring cameras.
  • Bells Mill Road (KY 1526): This remains a full closure at the bridge over Floyds Fork. The superstructure replacement is ongoing, and the road is not expected to reopen until mid-May.

TARC and Public Transit Status

For those utilizing public transportation, the Transit Authority of River City (TARC) reports that all routes are currently operating on regular schedules. All winter weather detours from the late January storms have been lifted. However, riders should be aware that TARC has recently begun public meetings regarding proposed updates to the passenger fare schedule, the first major adjustment in over a decade. Check your local stop for informational postings regarding these upcoming changes.

Drive safely and remember to move over for maintenance crews working along the highway shoulders.
