Morning Commute Overview for Monday, February 16, 2026

Good morning, Louisville. As we begin the work week on this Monday, February 16, 2026, commuters should prepare for a mix of planned infrastructure projects and reactive maintenance following recent winter weather. While most major arteries remain open, specific lane closures on I-71 and ongoing bridge work in the downtown corridor will require extra travel time this morning.

Major Interstate Alerts: I-71 and I-64

The most significant impact today is on Interstate 71. As part of the ongoing $50 million widening project, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has scheduled daytime lane closures in both directions between the I-65 interchange and Zorn Avenue. Expect these closures to begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue through 4:00 p.m. Crews are currently focused on installing barrier walls and median work. Traffic has been shifted to the outside shoulders, so please use caution when navigating this two-mile stretch.

  • I-64 East and West: Bridge replacement work continues near mile point 11.7 (Exit 10, Cannons Lane). Motorists should be alert for shifting traffic patterns and potential short-term lane closures throughout the day.
  • John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge: Three lanes remain closed as crews continue the replacement of expansion joints. This project has been extended through the fall of 2026, so this remains a long-term bottleneck for Northbound commuters.

Post-Winter Road Maintenance

Following the recent snow and ice event, KYTC District 5 has deployed maintenance crews across the Louisville Metro area for emergency pothole patching. These mobile operations may result in rolling lane closures on major interstates and state highways. These repairs are happening quickly as conditions are identified; drivers are urged to slow down and give road crews plenty of space to work safely.

Local Road Closures and Detours

Several local surface street projects are also active today:

  • Rudy Lane: A full closure is in effect between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road for a water main relocation. This closure is expected to last through mid-April.
  • Blevins Gap Road: A portion remains closed near Saw Mill Road for a culvert replacement project. Motorists are being detoured to the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265).
  • Chenoweth Lane: Expect intermittent delays between Shelbyville Road and Brownsboro Road due to ongoing roadway modifications and drainage enhancements.

TARC and Public Transit

The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) reports that all winter weather detours have been lifted and buses are operating on regular schedules. Additionally, in honor of Black History Month, TARC is observing the annual tradition of "saving a seat" for Rosa Parks on every bus throughout this week. Commuters using the New TARC Network should note that while redesign plans are public, the official rollout is not scheduled until August of this year.
