Crash sends vehicle into Highlands dining space during service hours

A vehicle crashed into a Highlands restaurant on Bardstown Road in late February, injuring multiple people and forcing the business to temporarily close while repairs are made. The incident occurred during service hours at Kiwami Ramen, near the intersection of Bardstown Road and Dunker Avenue, a heavily trafficked commercial stretch known for its dense concentration of bars and restaurants.

Police records and court filings identify the driver as 29-year-old Alexis Calvillo of Louisville. Authorities allege the driver was intoxicated at the time of the collision. Investigators also allege the driver exited the vehicle after impact and attempted to leave the scene before being detained.

Injuries reported and hospital transport confirmed

One diner was taken to the hospital following the crash; the individual was described in court-related reporting as a pregnant woman who had been inside the restaurant when the vehicle struck. No deaths were reported in connection with the incident. Accounts from the business indicated that guests and employees moved quickly to get people to safety immediately after the impact.

The collision caused extensive structural and interior damage, including broken glass and damage to interior walls in areas used for storage and restrooms. The restaurant said it would remain closed while repairs and insurance processes move forward.

Charges filed as case proceeds through court

Calvillo faces several charges connected to the crash and the subsequent interaction with officers. The allegations include operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest, and wanton endangerment. Court proceedings began in the days after the crash, and the case remains in the judicial process.

Business disruption and community response

With the dining room closed and repairs expected to take weeks, the crash has also created an immediate financial disruption for the restaurant and its staff. In response, a neighboring Louisville restaurant organized a short-term pop-up fundraiser in early March to generate support for employees and recovery costs while the damaged storefront remains out of service.

  • Location: Bardstown Road near Dunker Avenue in the Highlands

  • Impact: Vehicle entered the restaurant, damaging the storefront and interior walls

  • Injuries: One person transported to the hospital; additional injuries reported

  • Status: Restaurant temporarily closed pending repairs and insurance steps

The crash adds to a broader pattern seen in Louisville and other corridor-style commercial districts, where storefronts sit close to high-volume traffic and on-street parking. The incident has renewed attention on how quickly everyday service hours can turn into emergency response scenes when a vehicle leaves the roadway.
