Major Restrictions on the Kennedy Bridge

Commuters crossing the Ohio River this morning should prepare for significant congestion on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge. As part of the ongoing expansion joint replacement project, three lanes remain closed to traffic. This long-term rehabilitation effort is in its final stages, but the current configuration is causing substantial backups for those traveling between Southern Indiana and Downtown Louisville. Officials from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) have indicated that while the project is slated for completion later this year, the current lane restrictions are necessary for crews to safely replace critical components of the 61-year-old structure. Drivers are encouraged to utilize the Abraham Lincoln Bridge or the Sherman Minton Bridge as alternates to avoid the heaviest delays.

U.S. 42 and Watterson Expressway Overhaul

Traffic is also slow in the East End as work continues on the $130 million reconstruction of the I-264 and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) interchange. We are currently in the final weeks of Phase 1, which involves heavy median removal on the U.S. 42 bridge and shifting traffic patterns near the Watterson Expressway. Commuters can expect daily and nightly lane closures during non-peak hours. Notably, Rudy Lane is now completely closed to through traffic between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road. This closure, which began earlier this month for a water main relocation project, is expected to remain in place through mid-April. Traffic is being detoured via local side streets, and motorists should allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes for travel through the area.

West Louisville and Downtown Updates

The 'Reimagine 9th Street' project is currently impacting the morning flow in the West End. Construction crews are focused on the one-way to two-way conversion of Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Chestnut Street. While these major arteries remain open, lane narrowing and intermittent signal work near the 9th Street corridor are creating stop-and-go conditions. The project aims to improve connectivity between Downtown and the Russell neighborhood, but the transition to two-way traffic patterns requires extra vigilance from drivers accustomed to the traditional one-way flow.

Bullitt County Construction Kickoff

For those commuting from the south, the widening of Clermont Road (KY 245) in Bullitt County began earlier this week. The project, which covers the stretch from the I-65 interchange to Happy Hollow Road, has introduced new work zones and construction equipment to the area. Expect intermittent lane closures and lower speed limits as crews begin the multi-year expansion to four lanes. Early reports suggest that merging onto I-65 North from KY 245 is slower than usual due to the presence of heavy machinery.
