Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in Louisville should prepare for a challenging Wednesday, March 11, 2026. A combination of overnight infrastructure emergencies, ongoing major construction projects, and a severe weather outlook will likely lead to significant delays throughout the metro area. Motorists are encouraged to allow at least 20 extra minutes for their morning and afternoon travels.

Downtown Alert: Water Main Repair

A major water main break at the intersection of Preston and Gray streets, which occurred Tuesday afternoon, continues to impact downtown traffic. As of this morning, crews remain on-site conducting repairs and clearing debris. Significant blockages are reported at the following intersections:

  • Broadway and Preston Street: Traffic is heavily restricted; motorists should avoid this corridor.
  • Chestnut and Preston Street: Lane closures are in effect, causing backups near the Norton Healthcare Pavilion.

Drivers heading into the medical district should utilize Floyd Street or Jackson Street as north-south alternatives.

Interstate Construction and Blasting Schedules

Major work continues on the I-264 (Watterson Expressway) and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) improvement project. Commuters should be aware of the following:

  • I-264 Lane Shifts: Traffic remains shifted to the outside shoulders between Westport Road and I-71. While two lanes stay open during peak hours, the narrow lanes require reduced speeds.
  • Daily Blasting: Scheduled blasting operations are expected to occur today at approximately 2:00 p.m. This will necessitate intermittent roadblocks on I-264 and I-71, causing temporary but total halts in traffic.
  • U.S. 42 Restrictions: Eastbound U.S. 42 is reduced to one through lane west of Rudy Lane, and westbound is reduced to one lane at Northfield Drive.

On I-71, the widening project continues with daily alternating lane closures near the Zorn Avenue interchange and the junction to Frankfort Avenue. These restrictions are part of the ongoing $50 million safety enhancement initiative.

Local Road Closures

Several long-term local projects remain active today:

  • Rudy Lane: Remains fully closed between Brownsboro Road and Merrifield Road for water main relocation. This closure is expected to last through mid-April.
  • Edith Road and Mockingbird Valley Road: Both streets are closed near the I-71 overpass for bridge deck reconstruction.
  • Aiken Road: Expect intermittent lane closures with flagging between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for drainage improvements.

TARC and Weather Impact

TARC is currently operating on regular schedules; however, passengers should anticipate delays on routes passing through the downtown repair zone near Preston Street. Commuters are also reminded that new fare rates, which took effect earlier this month, are now standard for all boardings.

Finally, the National Weather Service has issued a Weather Impact Alert for today, forecasting rounds of strong storms. Heavy rain may lead to ponding on the Gene Snyder and Watterson Expressways, further slowing the evening rush hour. Please use caution and maintain safe following distances in wet conditions.
