Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Illness and Varicella Monitoring

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has issued a high-priority health advisory as surveillance data indicates a significant surge in seasonal respiratory illnesses across Jefferson County. As of March 2026, influenza cases have surpassed 11,600 for the current season, with 45 documented outbreaks reported in local schools and congregate care facilities. Health officials also report over 4,300 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and elevated activity for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and pertussis.

Additionally, a specific alert remains active regarding a varicella (chickenpox) outbreak, with more than 30 reported cases. Residents are reminded that chickenpox is highly contagious; individuals exhibiting symptoms must remain isolated until all blisters have fully scabbed over. The Department urges all citizens to ensure vaccinations for flu and COVID-19 are current and to practice frequent handwashing to mitigate community spread.
