Official State of Emergency Declaration

Governor Andy Beshear has officially declared a State of Emergency for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, including the Louisville metropolitan area, effective Saturday, January 24, 2026. This declaration follows a severe winter storm system moving through the region, bringing heavy snow accumulations, sleet, ice, and arctic temperatures. The Kentucky National Guard and Kentucky Emergency Management have been activated to assist local authorities. Residents are strongly advised to complete all necessary errands immediately and avoid all non-essential travel while conditions remain hazardous. High-altitude and shaded roadways are expected to experience significant icing.

Sanitation and Waste Collection Disruptions

Louisville Metro Public Works has announced that all garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections scheduled for Saturday, January 24, are cancelled due to the severe weather conditions. Additionally, the Waste Reduction Center, the Haz Bin hazardous waste facility, and all staffed recycling drop-off locations will remain closed today. Residents in the Urban Services District should keep their collection bins off the streets to allow snow plows to clear lanes effectively. Service updates and rescheduling information will be provided via the Recycle Coach app as conditions improve.

Public Health Advisories: Tetanus and Seasonal Awareness

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has issued a public advisory regarding a rise in documented tetanus infections. Health officials, led by Associate Medical Director Dr. Kris Bryant, report that while tetanus remains uncommon, the bacteria found in local soil and dust pose a heightened risk to those with puncture wounds or deep cuts. All adults are urged to verify their vaccination records and ensure they have received a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) booster within the last ten years. Separately, the department reminds residents that January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, encouraging regular eye screenings to prevent optic nerve damage and vision loss.

Road Closures and Infrastructure Projects

Several significant road and lane closures remain in effect throughout the city:

  • South Third Street: The portion between River Road and Main Street remains closed to all vehicle traffic due to the ongoing KFC Yum! Center roof replacement project.
  • Rufer Avenue Alleyway: The alley behind 1316-1518 Rufer Avenue is closed for the installation of a concrete retaining wall. Residents in this block have limited rear-property access.
  • I-65 Kennedy Bridge: The right three lanes and the right shoulder of the southbound John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge remain closed for expansion joint replacement. The ramp from I-65 South to I-64 West is also closed through the end of the month.

LIHEAP Winter Crisis Assistance

The Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services continues to accept applications for the Winter Crisis component of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program provides financial aid to households at risk of utility disconnection and is active through March 27, 2026. Eligibility is determined by household size and income levels up to 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Due to high demand during the current cold snap, residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
