Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Across the City

Today is Monday, January 19, 2026, and Louisville is coming together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we observe this national holiday, the city is filled with community-focused gatherings, service opportunities, and powerful public tributes. Whether you are looking to participate in a historic motorcade or spend the day exploring local history for free, here is your guide to what is happening today.

54th Annual MLK Motorcade and Celebration

One of the city’s most enduring traditions, the 54th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Motorcade, takes place this morning. Participants are invited to join the lineup in the Kroger parking lot at 28th and Broadway starting at 9:30 a.m. The procession will depart at 10:30 a.m., making its way to the King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church at 1620 Anderson Street. Following the motorcade, the church will host a special celebratory service at noon, which includes a complimentary community lunch provided to all attendees.

Community Free Day at the Muhammad Ali Center

In a fitting tribute to two of Louisville’s greatest icons of social justice, the Muhammad Ali Center is offering free admission to the public today from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visitors can explore the museum's permanent exhibits and view screenings of Dr. King’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech, which will be shown at the top of every hour. Additionally, at noon, the Muhammad Ali Center Council of Students will host their annual youth leadership panel, titled “Continuing the Dream, Continuing the Legacy,” in the center’s auditorium.

MLK Day of Service at UofL

For those looking to give back, the University of Louisville is hosting its annual MLK Day of Service. The program begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Student Activities Center (SAC) Ballroom located at 2100 S. Floyd Street. More than 20 local organizations, including the Kentucky Humane Society and The Hope Buss, are on-site to facilitate volunteer projects. This community meetup is a perfect way to turn the holiday into a "day on" rather than a "day off."

Public Exhibition and Evening Arts

If you prefer a quieter reflection, the University of Louisville’s Ekstrom Library is hosting a public exhibition titled "Life’s Rich Pageant." This collection of photographs by Pat McDonogh is available for viewing at the Friedman Gallery on the lower level from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. today. For evening entertainment, the Actors Theatre of Louisville will host a special Candlelight Concert at 8:45 p.m., featuring the music of Coldplay and Imagine Dragons performed by a string quartet in a stunning, candlelit setting.
